Character Name: Tsuzuki Asato
Character Series: Yami no Matsuei
Age: 26 at death; 70+ years of service as a shinigami
Background:
Obviously there are SPOILERS ahead. Read at own risk if you don't want to be spoiled for Yami no Matsuei
Though much of Asato's life is a mystery, what is known is that as a child, he was quite often picked on and bullied by others. He was marked as not "human" because of purple eyes and strange powers, having an inhuman ability to heal even before becoming a shinigami as well as other unspecified powers (probably making small things explode, etc. demonic like things, since I'm of the believe that Muraki was right and Tsuzuki is half demon). However rather than hating those who hurt him, he only believed them, seeing his existence as a sin itself. He sought happiness in little things and smiled despite the pain. It was a trait he carried with him into the after life. It is also infered that while he is younger, something terrible happened with many people being either hurt or killed, perhaps related to his powers, for which he blames himself, but it is not known what it was or if he was indeed responsible. There is also implications that Asato had an older sister named Ruka, whom he dearly loved.
How Asato grew up is left very much a mystery other than the fact that he eventually turns to suicide. At 18 Asato attempted suicide and ended up in the care of a certain doctor. This doctor, after some observation, found that each attempt at suicide failed due to his ability to heal. In fact, Asato fell into a catatonic-like state in which he only pulled out of enough to try and end his life yet again. The man lived 8 years without food, water, or sleep and through multiple attempts on his life until eventually in 1926, at the age of 26 Asato finally succeeded. The doctor kept a thorough journal of this particular patient, amazed and intrigued at the very idea of what the man had achieved so naturally. Eventually this journal ends up in the hands of his grandson, Kazutaka Muraki.
It is again not known why Asato became a shinigami when he was so intent on dying, though some theorize that it was a sort of punishment sent down by the head of Meifu (the bureaucratic afterlife). One way or another, he became a shinigami after death, fated to work ferrying lost souls for the Summons Section of Meifu and investigate and resolve cases of souls not reaching their destinations after death. The man does this for 70 something years, actually quite good at it in some ways despite the pain it sometimes brings his rather gentle heart to hurt others. As opposed to other shinigami with an average of 2-3 shikigami (a summoned spirit/god) if they have any at all, Asato has 12 high-ranking shikigami at his command. However, he's also earned a reputation for being a slacker, lazy, over-indulgent, and childish in his work on top of having a long string of partners that never last long (shinigami always work in pairs).
Enter Hisoka Kurosaki. The newest unwitting rookie saddled with Asato. He's a stand-offish, reserved teenager who wants nothing to do with Asato once he finds out he was tricked into taking him as a partner. It doesn't help matters that Hisoka is an empath, able to feel what those around him do as well as sense other spiritually related impressions, which makes it hard for him to even relate to people at all. However, these two have more in store for them than even they know as their first case turns into a meeting with not only Hisoka's brutal killer, but also a man obsessed with getting Tsuzuki's body one way or another. After rescuing Hisoka from Muraki (the doctor/killer/pyscho/stalker/grandson/etc.) and escaping from him through a combined effort the two of them decide to try and make their partnership work (Asato was always willing, this was more of a turning point for Hisoka).
The two continue to take cases together, growing closer and closer to one another, often times brushing paths with Muraki, the man always escaping to torment them another day.
Enter Kyoto, an area where Asato used to work with his third partner, Tatsumi. The two had remained close thereafter, Tatsumi working as the secretary to the Summons Section (the assigned department for shinigami), but he couldn't take seeing the breaks in Asato's mask of smiles and the pain and guilt of the other man when they worked and ended their partnership himself. (This probably led to Asato even more diligently hiding his true feelings from partners and keeping some distance on his end, only reaching out for the others benefit.) In Kyoto, once again they come across a case involving the serial killer doctor. This time however, Muraki plans on taking Asato's body once and for all. Through using innocents, he tortures the man, "piling corpses at his feet" which weighs heavily on the man's conscience until the point where it breaks, sending Asato into a catatonic state much like when he was alive. Muraki then plans on using his body with it's ability to heal to bring his stepbrother back to life in order to kill him himself (the other boy destroyed his life and nearly killed him as well years ago). Meanwhile, Hisoka and the other shinigami are desperately looking for Asato, knowing the sort of mental state he is in and fearing for his life in Muraki's hands. After a fierce battle with one of Muraki's "friends" Hisoka finally learns where Asato is being kept, however by the time they arrive, the building is in flames. Asato had stabbed Muraki and then summoned one of his most powerful and loyal shikigami, Touda, to burn the building down, himself included, knowing that Touda's flames were so fierce they could even kill a shinigami.
Despite this, Hisoka goes in after him alone (Tatsumi hesitated, wanting to let Asato do as he wished), risking the fire to get to Asato. Once he finds him he refuses to leave him there even though Asato just wants to die so he can't hurt anyone anymore. Hisoka embraces him and asks him essentially to live just for him if that's what it will take for him to live, even if it's a selfish thing to ask. Surprised, Asato returns the embrace and seems to resign to Hisoka's request as the building collapses around them.
The two were rescued at the last minute by Tatsumi, who encased them in shadows to wisk them out of the fire, realizing that because Hisoka was able to reach Asato that maybe he can make the other man happy. Due to Hisoka's connection to Muraki through his death, they both know he survived the fire somehow, but decide they will go on to face him when the time comes together.
(This is where the anime ends. I'm using anime and bits of manga sort of smushed together, but that's the gist of his background. I'm assuming they go on doing their jobs as normal after Kyoto and I'm pulling him from either before or during the Gensoukai arc. That part was just getting really out there for me and she never finished the series from about that point on anyway so I have no idea where it was headed. XD;)
Personality:
Asato is the type of person who is all smiles in regards to himself. He hides whatever lurks within behind a grin or a wink or a playful whine. He loves food, particularly sweets and goes to great lengths for them at times. He on the surface appears to be a very easy going, lazy, flippant person. His kindness is always evident and foremost as well, concern for others easily overwhelming him. He puts other people first, finding himself not worth much. Which is the truth laying behind that smile and care-free attitude. He feels pain and guilt very accutely and takes blame upon himself for those around him coming to harm, including the very souls he has to guide to the afterlife. Despite all the darkness and guilt lurking in him, he hides it all, not wanting to burden others with his problems. This is also part of why he hides the scars on his wrist from his suicide attempts in life with his watch. Asato's compassion is both one of his greatest traits, as well as his undoing usually. This trusting, kind nature is probably what got him so many shikigami, including Touda, whom he freed from imprisonment despite his crimes, so that he would not suffer alone any longer.
In terms of his job, he's a very powerful shinigami, but doesn't tend to use it much. The only times he really whips out all that power is when others are in danger. Otherwise, he's very childish and has a well-earned reputation for being an all-around slacker. He only takes it seriously when people start getting hurt in front of him. He's also fairly intelligent and resourceful, though he doesn't always think things all the way through first. After all, he does have to do quite a bit of detective work in his job and is fairly intuitive. He's not overly smart or anything though and can do very stupid things and come off as a moron pretty often. (Hisoka's favorite name for him after all is "baka." ♥)
As for his powers in Memento, I've decided that the healing is something innate that shinigami just do as nature of their being, but the other skills (invisibility, flying) are skills they'll have to remember before having access to. The same for Tsuzuki's spells and his ability to summon his shikigami. (I'll be talking to Touda-mun to see what they want to do in terms of their contract here in Memento.)
Some other quirks besides his insane-love of sweets is his love of gardening and dancing, both of which he learned from his sister. He also thinks he can cook and despite his sister teaching him this as well and his love of food, he's utterly horrible at it. But he's convinced otherwise.
Item Lost: (Or unrecoverable memory, for those without precious items.) Memories of Hisoka's asking him to live for him in the fire, giving him a reason to go on.
